Your Google Business Profile is the highest-leverage marketing asset a local business owns. It's free, it sits at the top of local search, and most of your competitors set it up once in 2019 and never touched it again. Here's how to make yours the strongest in your market.
The fields that actually move rankings
- Primary category. The strongest single signal. Be as specific as possible ("Air duct cleaning service", not "Cleaning service"), and add every legitimate secondary category.
- Business name. Use your real name. Keyword-stuffed names get competitors reported and suspended, and Google keeps cleaning them out.
- Services and descriptions. List every service with a description; these feed matching for long-tail searches.
- Service area / address. Accurate and consistent with your website and every directory.
The activity signals
- Photos, monthly. Real jobs, real people, real trucks. Profiles with fresh photos get more clicks and more calls.
- Posts, weekly. Offers and completed-job stories keep the profile visibly alive. We schedule these in bulk for clients.
- Q&A. Seed the questions customers actually ask and answer them properly, before a stranger answers wrongly for you.
- Reviews. Volume, velocity and replies. Reply to every single one, in the review's language, naturally mentioning city and service, it's read by customers and crawled by Google.
What gets profiles suspended
Suspensions hit hardest in home services. The common triggers: keyword-stuffed names, virtual offices presented as real addresses, inconsistent data between profile and website, and bursts of suspicious reviews. Clean, consistent, verifiable information is your insurance policy; recovery from a suspension can take weeks you can't afford.
Track it like the asset it is
You can't manage what you don't measure. Our SecretRanker platform monitors profile changes, tracks your map rankings on a geo-grid across your service area, and manages review flows, the operational layer most businesses are missing. It's included in our local SEO service.
Questions we hear a lot
How often should I update my Google Business Profile?
Photos and posts: weekly to monthly. Hours and services: the moment they change. Reviews: reply within a day or two. The profiles that win are the ones treated as a living channel, not a listing.
Someone suggested I add keywords to my business name. Should I?
No. It works until it doesn't: competitors report it, Google suspends it, and you lose weeks of calls. Build the same advantage legitimately through categories, services, reviews and content.
