This is the actual checklist we run for every new local SEO client. Do it all and you will beat the majority of your local competitors, because most businesses do less than half of it.
Google Business Profile (steps 1-6)
- Claim and verify your profile, and make sure no duplicate listings exist for your business.
- Nail the primary category. It's the strongest signal on the profile. Add every relevant secondary category.
- List every service with descriptions, not just the top three.
- Real photos, monthly. Jobs, team, vehicles. Stock photos convince no one, including Google.
- Fill business hours, service area and attributes completely and keep them current.
- Post weekly. Offers, completed jobs, tips. An active profile outranks a dormant one.
Reviews (steps 7-9)
- Build a review flow: every happy customer gets the link at the moment they're happiest, right after the job.
- Reply to every review in the review's own language, naturally weaving your city and service into the reply. Google reads them.
- Handle bad reviews carefully and fast - a calm, human reply, never a template, and never auto-posted.
Your website (steps 10-13)
- One page per service per city you seriously serve, each genuinely useful, not copy-paste with the city name swapped.
- Match your name, address and phone exactly between the site and the profile, and mark it up with LocalBusiness schema.
- Make the site fast on phones. That's where local searches happen.
- Get local links: suppliers, chambers of commerce, local sponsorships and news mentions beat a hundred directory spam links.
Measurement (steps 14-15)
- Track map rankings on a geo-grid, not a single point. Rankings differ block by block; averages hide where you're losing. This is exactly what our SecretRanker platform does.
- Track calls and leads to their source, so you know which work brings money and double down there.
Want this done for you, with the tracking included? That's our local SEO service.
Questions we hear a lot
How long does local SEO take to work?
Profile and review improvements often move map rankings within weeks. The full checklist, including city pages and local links, typically shows its real effect over 2-4 months.
Do I need a physical storefront to rank in the map pack?
No. Service-area businesses rank without showing an address. What matters is a verified profile, consistent information, reviews, and genuine service-area relevance.
What's the single highest-impact item?
If you do only one thing: fix your primary category and build a steady stream of reviews with keyword-aware replies. Those two move more map rankings than anything else per hour invested.
